![]() ![]() Great fishing, rugged day hike on off day, you could hike Whiksey Mt. This is something you don't really get on the Pinedale side of the Winds, quick access to truly exquisite experience. Trail in the spectacular Shoshone National Forest near Dubois, WY Ross Lakes is about 6 miles one way. If you could handle the somewhat steeper elevation of the Whiskey Mt. The trail is mostly flat, Shoshone Lake is gorgeous with various campsites around the lake.Īll of these hikes are popular and all backpacking trips require a backpacking permit. Then Out: DeLacy Creek ~ 5 miles to the main road. In Craigs Pass ( Old Faithful Road / West Thumb Road) ~ 3 miles to the lake. Shoshone Lake Trail: This trail can be modified to fit the distances you'd like to create. In: Pebble Creek Campground to Out Near Northeast Entrance: This trail is ~12 miles with a steep climb at the beginning of the trail to the top of a ridge, then it's mostly flat throughout along Pebble Creek. In: Grebe Lake Trail ~ 3 miles to lake, lovely lakeshore campsites - then either east to Cascade Lake (a nothing lake, more of a pond) but it offers the chance to hike up Observation Peak (2 miles) and then hike out to the Canyon Picnic Area (~ 1.5 miles) OR From Grebe Lake go West to Wolf and Ice Lake, or out at Wolf). I went in mid-August and wildflowers were spectacular then. Here are a couple / three suggestions that might interest you: If you are here on Aug 7 you will have a full moon. Keep in mind you will need to carry a bear canister. Last day was a trip down the Alaska Basin Trail then relatively flat walking past Phelps, Taggart & Bradley Lakes back to the car at Lupine Meadow trailhead. (If you want to cut the trip short, could come down Cascade Canyon Tr and back to car.) Day three went past Schoolroom Glacier and spent most of the day in the Alaska Basin area where spent night three. I continued on passing the junction with the Cascade Canyon Trail and spent the second night in the camping zone behind the peaks of Mt Owen & Grand Teton. Next day after topping out you start down towards Lake Solitude and Mica Lake. I made first night's camp near Holly Lake. Walk around the west side of Jenny Lake (take spur trail to Inspiration Point & its waterfall) then past String Lake and picked up the Paintbrush Canyon trail. Suggestion - a trip I did some years ago which involves no shuttles. There is a REALLY nice site just outside the park boundary near here you do not need a permit for.Ģ) Hike over Death Canyon shelf and down into Alaska Basin and then hike route noted above. If you have time take the short side hike to Avalanche Divide.ģ) Hike over Paintbrush Divide and camp night 3 at Holly Lake preferably otherwise in the Upper Paintbrush Divide.Ĥ) Hike 6.2 miles to Leigh/String Lake Trailhead from Holly Lake.ġ)Take Tram up, hike to and camp in vicinty of Marion Lake. I would camp near Mirror.Ģ) Hike over Hurricane Pass and camp HIGH in the South Fork zone. In the Basin I greatly prefer Mirror Lake to Sunset Lake but conventional wisdom dictates otherwise. Hike the 8 or so miles into Alaska Basin. The "Old Skyline Trail" heading farther north is not a good choice for novice Backpackers.ĭepending on how much ground you want or can cover in a day here are a couple of options I'd consider.ġ) Get shuttled to the Teton Canyon Trailhead near Alta, WY about one hour from Jackson. The "Complete" Teton Crest Trail goes from Phillips Pass to the Leigh/String Lake Trailhead via Paintbrush Canyon. Or you could hike north to south, start up Cascade Canyon Trail and take Hurricane Pass (a real beautiful area) to the Crest Trail, and then go as far south as time permits, leaving on the closest canyon trail. You could also start at Death Canyon Trailhead and hike up the Alaska Basin Trail, but that's real steep trail, and you may not want to start your trip that way. Easiest option is to take the Tram to the top of Rendezvous Mountain and head north from there - although you'll miss Philips Pass, which is a real pretty area imo. Doing the entire Crest Trail, from Philips Pass and coming out on Paintbrush Trail (the crest trail actually keep going north into the Jedediah Smith WA, and you can hike into Yellowstone if you want to), could take more than 4 days, so you could think about shortening it. ![]() ![]() ![]() You'll need to arrange a drop off at your trailhead, as well as where you'll end the trip. It's high elevation and can be steep in places, so being fit is a requirement. The Crest Trail sounds perfect for your requirements. ![]()
